Laparoscopic surgical techniques and instruments to remove the uterus (womb) and/or tubes and ovaries through the vagina
Vaginal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vagina. One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may be removed during the procedure, as well. A vaginal approach may be chosen if the uterus is not greatly enlarged and if the condition prompting the surgery is benign and limited to the uterus.

Laparascopic HysterectomyA laparoscope is a viewing tube through which structures within the abdomen and pelvis can be seen. A small surgical incision (cut) is made in the abdominal wall to permit the laparoscope to enter the abdomen or pelvis. Additional tubes can also be pushed through the same incision allowing the introduction of probes and other instruments. In this way, surgical procedures can be performed without the need for a large surgical incision

Laparoscopically Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH) is a procedure using laparoscopic surgical techniques and instruments to remove the uterus (womb) and/or tubes and ovaries through the vagina (birth canal).

A small incision is made near the navel. The laparoscope is inserted through this cut into the abdomen. A harmless gas also is put into your abdomen through this cut. The gas expands the space around your pelvic organs so that your doctor has enough room to look at and move them. The doctor can see your pelvic organs on a special TV-like screen. One or more other small cuts (¼-½-inch wide) in the abdomen are made and, these cuts are used to insert devices to move the pelvic organs and help remove the uterus. Devices that may be used include scissors, forceps (grasping device), clamps, or a special stapling device. Some doctors may use an electric tool to cut tissue or stop bleeding. A cut is made where the uterus joins the vagina. The bladder and rectum are gently pushed off the uterus. Then, the uterus is removed through the cut made in the vagina. The cuts in the abdomen and the vagina are closed with stitches.

Advantage of LVAH is incision are relatively small, the scars, pain and recovery time from LVAH are usually significantly less with an abdominal hysterectomy.
